Spring Pinwheels Quilt

Constructed and hand quilted by me.

This spring I signed up for an online quilt swap through Quilting Gallery. The quilt had to be between 12 by 12" and 24 by 24", and had to have a spring theme.

Well, of course spring makes me thing of flowers and ice cream and sunshine, but it also makes me think of all the little kids toys that catch wind - kites, and my favorite, pinwheels.

I thought about doing a pinwheel block, but I wanted to jazz it up a bit, which is how I came up with this quilt.

Instead of a traditional pinwheel pattern, I just went straight to the source, and folded the fabric over to make the blades on the pinwheel. You can see it better in the above picture because it's taken a little bit from the side.

Here are the three different pinwheels:

I had so much fun making this quilt. I got to try out the new folding technique, and I'm really happy wit the results. I also got to do applique for the first time in a quilt, after taking an applique class earlier this year. And I had enough time to hand quilt it, as well.

Hopefully the recipient will like it as much as I do!
