Nine-Patch Quilt

Constructed and hand quilted by me. This is the very first quilt I ever made. My friend Marilyn was nice enough to get me started in quilting, and this was my introduction. She let me rummage through her fabric stash and helped me pick out these two fabrics, taught me how to cut the fabric, and basically just let me figure out a cool nine-patch layout on my own. I finished this in... late 2002 maybe? I don't even remember. And I wasn't in the habit of labeling my quilts yet. Oh well.

Since it was my first, it has some goofy errors. Very few of my seams match up well, and my quilting stitches are HUGE! But I still love it. I was a bit perturbed when I took the top in to a quilt store to get backing fabric for it (the fabulous pink), and when the woman measured it for fabric she said "Well, it's almost square." Damn, woman, it was my first quilt!

I'm still kinda afraid to wash it, for fear that it will fall apart. But now that I know what I'm doing, even if a seam decided to give up, I could fix it. So I should probably wash it tonight. It's just lap quilt size, so I usually use it as a picnic blanket. It's the perfect size for two people to sit on.

This is a close up of the back, so that you can see the fabric and see my quilting design. Which, I'm quite proud of. I'd totally quilt it the same way again.

However, I think my quilting stitch has improved a bit. Look at the size of these things! It's four, maybe five per inch.
