So tonight I went on a fabulous adventure- the Snowmass Rodeo! It may come as a surprise to know that I am a rodeo fan. I think they are tons of fun, and the Snowmass Rodeo is one of the best that I have ever attended! What makes a great rodeo? For me it's two things: variety of the events, and talent of the cowboys. Snowmass Rodeo had both. It's been held every summer for 35 years, and it happens every week of the summer. Next Wednesday is the last day of the season, so I knew I had to catch it quick!
In addition to the rodeo events, they also have a chuckwagon barbeque catered by the Hickory House in Aspen, a restaurant I've been wanting to visit all summer, so I had dinner at the rodeo too! Two birds, one stone! Fabulous! And I took a lot of pictures... here's just a few of them.
This was the grand entrance of the riders and cowboys and such.
All the cute rodeo signs.
Ahh, barrel racing. The women's rodeo sport.
Team roping, which is totally my favorite rodeo sport! It just looks like it takes crazy amounts of skill.
And the bareback bronco riding! These are sort of a little bit blurry. It's hard to catch the action!
The bull riding was the last event of the evening, so it was a little too dark for pictures. This bull managed to get away and run around the ring a few times.
They have two kids events. The 2nd two pictures are from the calf scramble. Kids fill the arean and they have to chase after calves trying to pull a ribbon off its tail. But my real favorite was the first one, "Mutton Bustin'". In this one, little kids pile on the safety gear, jump on the back of a sheep, and try to stay on for 8 seconds. The winner tonight didn't make 8, but she did make 7.6. There are few things funnier than seeing a 5 year old fall off a sheep. :)
This was kinda weird, but still good. They have a little break with entertainment, and it was this cowboy who had trained his horse to jump up on the truck bed, then onto the top of the trailer. He also trained two bison to do the same trick. And I think bison are totally cool, so this was entertaining.
And, last but not least, just some random rodeo pictures:
