Meeting and Interviewing the Mayor.

Yesterday, while getting dressed, I decided to wear a skirt. I’d like to pretend it was because it was the first Monday at the summer job, but really, it just worked best with the heels I wanted to wear. Heels, skirt, nice button-up shirt, it was a stylish day. I was particularly glad to be a bit dressed up later on that morning, when I set up an appointment to interview the Mayor of Aspen for an article I’m working on.

I got down to City Hall and checked in with the receptionist, and went into the office where I saw a guy sitting at a table eating lunch. He looked, oh, rather like a summer intern. When he stood up and started talking to me, I realized it was the Mayor. Yes, on a Monday afternoon in the office the Mayor was wearing Chacos with socks, cargo shorts, a t-shirt, and had a backpack on the entire time. I felt a little bit over-dressed.

After the interview when I was walking to the car, I started to think about Mayors for some of the previous towns I’ve lived in. Mayor Sherratt was an older gentleman who I never saw without a dress shirt, tie, and sports coat. Rocky and the Governator were both in the category of suit and tie for special events, which kept the casual wardrobe open for slacks and a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up. But I can’t imagine any Mayor in cargo shorts and a t-shirt in the office. Yup, Dorothy isn’t in Kansas anymore, people.
